Ragamalika

Indian Classical Raga

Ragamalika, meaning 'garland of ragas', is not a single raga but a Carnatic composition form in which different sections of one piece — typically each charanam — are set to a different raga while keeping a common tala. It appears in varnams, swarajatis, jatiswarams, slokas, thillanas and concluding mangalam pieces. Notable examples include the navaragamalika, set to nine ragas, and Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer's melakarta ragamalika, which spans all 72 melakarta ragas.
