Kafi

Indian Classical Raga

Kafi is a raga in Hindustani classical music and the principal raga of the Kafi thaat. It is a sampoorna-sampoorna (heptatonic) raga built on komal gandharam and komal nishadam. Its scale corresponds to the Carnatic raga Kharaharapriya and to the Dorian mode in Western music. Folk music in Tappa, Hori, Dadra, Kirtan and Bhajan from different parts of India has been composed in this raga. The atmosphere it creates is suitable for both types of Shringar (separation and union).
