Khamas

Indian Classical Raga

Khamas is a janya raga of the 28th melakarta Harikambhoji. It is an asymmetric, vakra raga: rishabham is absent from the ascent but appears in the descent, giving the arohanam a zigzag shape. Khamas evokes shringara rasa and is especially associated with javali compositions, which are romantic in character. It is traditionally sung late at night.
