Sama

Indian Classical Raga

Sama is a janya raga of the 29th melakarta Shankarabharanam. It shares its arohanam with the ragas Arabhi and Devagandhari, all built on the same five ascending notes, and is distinguished from them by its nyasa (resting) note: halting on the gandhara is characteristic of Sama. It appears in compositions such as Muthuswami Dikshitar's 'Annapurne Vishalakshi', Tyagaraja's 'Santamu Leka' and Sadashiva Brahmendra's 'Manasa Sancharare'.
