Varali

Indian Classical Raga

Varali is a janya raga of the 39th melakarta Jhalavarali in Carnatic music. It is a vakra sampoorna raga using all seven notes, with characteristic ornamentation on gandharam, madhyamam and nishadam, and is the Ghana raga that uses prati madhyamam. Its rasa is karuna (pathos) and shringara, expressing grief, sorrow and the pangs of separation. It can be sung at any time of day (sarvakalika).
