Punnagavarali

Indian Classical Raga

Punnagavarali is a janya raga of the 8th melakarta Hanumatodi in Carnatic music. It is a nishadantya raga, starting and ending on nishadam within a single octave, and is usually rendered in madhyama sruti. Its rasa is predominantly karuna (compassion and pathos), and it is traditionally associated with night. In Tamil wedding tradition, a piece called the Odam, played at the muhurtam, is often set in this raga, and it is linked in folklore to snake charmers' tunes.
